Escape to the Cookson Hills! Canoe the wild Illinois River! Discover the vast expanse of the Diamond H Scout Ranch and fifty miles of extreme adventure! What is a 50-Miler?To qualify for the BSA 50-Miler Award, individuals must plan for the trek and travel 50 miles of trail or canoe route without the aid of motorized transportation. During the time on the trail or waterway, participants must complete a minimum of 10 hours each of group work on projects to improve the trail, springs, campsite, portage or area. Diamond H is Extreme AdventureThe Diamond H 50-Miler is really three treks in one. Imagine the fun and freedom of canoeing two days down the scenic Illinois River with a final landing on the cool, clear waters of Lake Tenkiller. The fun keeps coming as your crew rides mountain bikes through the hidden valleys of the Cookson Hills. Finally, reach the summit of your trek by backpacking across 6,000 acres of rugged wilderness, unexplored streams, and forested hillsides. This will truly be a memorable adventure that will stay with you for a lifetime. A Guided JourneyThe Diamond H 50-Miler will be the most intense, physically demanding, fun-packed week of your life, and our staff will be there to guide you on every step of your adventure. As you paddle down Oklahoma's most scenic river, experienced guides will help you navigate through the trees, past the cliffs, and around the rocks. We will gear you up for a breathtaking and challenging bike ride and support your crew all the way back to camp. We'll provide the food on the trail as well as several home-cooked meals at Base Camp. The newly-constructed Central Lodge includes a kitchen, meeting hall, showers, restrooms, and air-conditioning. Need some backpacking tips? No problem! Our staff of veteran backpackers will mentor those with minimal experience while letting the expert trekkers lead the way. Whatever the experience level of your crew, our staff will provide the knowledge, techniques, and resources to help make your trek a positive adventure of a lifetime! A Customized ProgramWhat will you do when you're not dodging snags in the Illinois River or hiking through the deep woods of Diamond H? It's your call! Planning well ahead of time, we can provide an intriguing program based on the lore of the Cookson Hills and Leave No Trace, or you can use this 50-Miler trek for a program under your own leadership. For example, you may consider a Troop Leadership Training or a Venturing Leadership Skills Course. We will work with you to plan your ideal outdoor experience. Who Should Attend?The Diamond H 50-Miler is the perfect program for Venturing Crews, older Boy Scout patrols, Order of the Arrow chapters, Lodge Executive Committees, Venturing Officers Associations, and other youth groups. It is an excellent alternative to National High-Adventure Bases. Individuals may also attend as part of a provisional contingent. Adult leaders over 21 must be a part of each trek. Youth EligibilityAll youth must be at least 13 years old before January 1, 2010.Venturers and Boy Scouts are eligible to attend.This program requires greater physical strength, mental fitness, and outdoor skill proficiency than a typical summer camp.A Class 3 physical must be completed and brought to camp.Crew size is limited to 12 people. Pre-camp conditioning is recommended. Trek FeeThe fee is $295 per participant, youth or adult. This includes use of canoes, PFDs, bicycles, helmets, cooking gear, program equipment, meals, tents, Central Lodge at Base Camp, staff support, and commemorative patches. Each participant or contingent must provide transportation to and from Diamond H Scout Ranch, a backpack, sleeping bag, and personal equipment. How Do You Sign Up?Slots are limited and we are taking applications beginning September 1, 2008. A deposit of $150 per participant is due upon registration. Youth under 18 must have parent or guardian permission to participate.
